SOUNDPAINTING is the multi-disciplinary live-composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. It allows the composer (aka Soundpainter) to shape the material, offered by the performers, into a composition created in the moment. The language was developed by composer Walter Thompson in New York beginning in the late 1970’s. Soundpainting is now practiced in over 35 countries and on five continents. Thompson divides his time between New York and Europe where he is celebrated for his unique contribution to composition in one or more disciplines. Visit Soundpainting.com for more information.
The performances by the Walter Thompson Orchestra are funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble’s guitarist Rolf Sturm, trumpeter Rob Henke and Actress/Director Leese Walker recently returned from Paris where they performed as part of the Walter Thompson Orchestra (small group) at the first International Soundpainting Festival.

Soundpainting is the multidisciplinary live composing sign language for Musicians, Dancers, Actors and Visual Artists. . Presently (2015) the language comprises more than 1500 gestures that are signed by the Soundpainter (composer) to indicate the type of material desired of the performers. The creation of the composition is realized through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. Soundpainting was created in Woodstock, New York in 1974 by Walter Thompson.
The performances by the Walter Thompson Orchestra are funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Join us for these Soundpainting sessions, “Advanced Soundpainting Session-Beginners Welcome.” We cover new concepts around this live-composing sign language, and share new ideas. Beginners can ‘swim’ and ask questions, and a short overview of gestures can also be done before diving in with the rest of the group. Hosted each month by two Soundpainter hosts, these sessions will cover a variety of live-composition topics and will concentrate on different disciplines such as: acting, dancing/movement, lighting design, visual art, music, electronic music. Join us every last Sunday of the month. Soundpainting hosts include: Mark Lindberg, Evan Mazunik, Gil Selinger, Dennis Shafer, Tomi Tsunoda, and Leese Walker, each leaders of their own Soundpainting ensembles in New York.
This March 30th will be hosted by Dennis Shafer and Leese Walker, along with Leese’s ensemble, the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble. Dennis Shafer is a saxophonist and live-composer, and Leese Walker’s background is an actor and director.

This February 23rd session we are lucky to have composer and woodwind improvisor Etienne Rolin from Bordeaux, France, who will join forces with Tomi Tsunoda, theatre director/Soundpainter. Both Rolin and Tsunoda teach and perform as Soundpainters around the world, and have been working with live composition methods for decades.
Soundpainting is a form of living composition where the composer-conductor uses gestures to make music and performance art in real time. You may attend this session as an absolute beginner (you do not even need to be a musician) that doesn’t know any of the gestures.
Guitarist/composer Yeonathan Shachar is the director of the Paintbrush Orchestra and the Cinesthesia Soundpainting Orchestra.
